Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
Short answer
A humming-but-not-spinning disposal is almost always jammed. There's a hex slot on the bottom of the disposal — insert the little Allen wrench (usually taped to the disposal or included with it) and turn it back and forth to free the flywheel. Then press the reset button on the bottom. If it runs, remove whatever caused the jam (usually a fruit pit, a bone, or a rubber band).
The Allen-wrench trick
Every modern garbage disposal has a 1/4" hex socket on the underside. Insert the wrench, rock it back and forth 90 degrees each way until it turns freely. This physically frees the impellers. Do this with the switch OFF and unplugged.
Reset button
The red or black reset button on the bottom of the disposal pops out when it overheats. Press it back in. If it won't stay in, let it cool for 15 minutes and try again. If it never stays in, the motor thermal-fused itself and the disposal is done.
When to replace
Chronic jamming, a leak from the bottom seam of the disposal, or an old unit (~10+ years) — replace instead of repair. Basic 1/2 HP disposals are $100–$180; installation is 45 minutes.
